The driver of a locomotive stopped the train he was piloting on Wednesday to prevent hitting a herd of elephants crossing railroad tracks in West Bengal, India.  A video of the incident was tweeted by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and quickly went viral.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted the video, and in the 1-minute 33-second clip, the train can be seen stopping suddenly as three elephants including a baby calf cross the railroad tracks.

“The alertness & prompt action of loco pilot & crew helped to save lives of three elephants Elephant including one baby elephant crossing rail tracks on Sivok-Gulma section in West Bengal,” Goyal stated.

“The train stopped immediately, waiting for the elephants to safely cross over to the other side.”

The video has exceeded two-million views with nearly all wonderful comments and smile emojis since posted on November 11.

  1. WTG!!! Glad the elephants were able to cross the tracks safely this time…… too bad the train tracks can’t either go above the ground or below the ground so that ground level is safer for everyone (animals AND people)……
