Last dog at Tacoma shelter and it’s heartbreaking

Autumn watches everyone pass by, watches the other dogs at the shelter being leashed up to leave with their special person, watches the children go by and the adults smile, but no one stops for her. Autumn is the last dog left at the Tacoma Humane Society. Why doesn’t anyone fall in love with her?

“Breaks my heart to see her all alone in there,” a volunteer at the shelter wrote on social media, hoping to attract attention for Autumn. “Looks like she will need someone who’s dedicated and ready to take on the challenge. So worth it though!”

Autumn is a spayed female pit bull and Chinese Sharpei mix. The shelter estimates her age to be about three-years-old. She arrived at the shelter on April 5, 2020, and had been surrendered because her owner could no longer care for her.

As for her disposition, the staff describes her as sweet, but Autumn takes time to warm up to people – once she does, however she is “a super cuddle-bug.”

Autumn is reactive to other animals and will need to be the only pet in the home. She’s very energetic and will do best with a lot of exercise to keep her mind occupied and her body active.

“Ideal home: Her future family should be ready to take on training to help her with her reactiveness with other dogs become less. TEENS OR ADULTS ONLY, so they can understand her body language and give her space when she needs it. Due to this girl`s HIGH Prey Drive and extreme reactivness to other dogs while in our care, Autumn is not fit for apartment/condo living and would do best in a home.

Please share Autumn’s plight with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.

  1. Hi there! Thanks for sharing Autumn’s information. Please know, Autumn is one of several dogs currently available for adoption at our shelter. Autumn is receiving lots of love and care from our shelter staff and volunteers while she waits for her perfect home. Autumn needs a home with teens/adults only and where she can be the only pet. Thanks!

  2. Hey guys. My name is Elliot. I’m a single combat veteran, and am moving into an triplex that has a front and a back yard fully fenced, this story of autum really was tough to read. Almost a year exactly lost my girl Monroe to ancancwr of the blood. Surgeries and chemo and many other treatments later made nondifference. Still paying off the debt from trying to help. She passed away and it was the hardest thing I’ve gone through, it’s taken me a year to be able to honestly be ready to take on another best friend. I’ve been patient and waiting for one of there stories to really hit me. And hers has. If she is still available I would be honored to take her on. I am a student and have ample time for training and practice and love. Appreciate you taking the time to read this. Let me know if she is still available. [email protected]
