Hondo, a K-9 officer with the Herriman City Police Department killed while on duty, will be buried in a special casket bearing his portrait. Rawtin Garage designed the custom casket, which featured a portrait of Hondo wearing his police harness.
According to the Herriman City Police Department, Hondo was shot while assisting officers during the apprehension of a fugitive in Salt Lake City on February 13. The dog was rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital, but died a short time later.
Officers contacted the Rawtin Garage, a local paint store specializing in motorcyles and classic cars, and asked if they could design a casket as a special tribute to Hondo. Within 24-hours, the emotional photo of the dog’s casket went viral on social media.
“What an honor it was to paint a hero’s casket,” the garage posted on their Facebook page.
Hondo, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, joined the force in 2015; he assisted in over 100 felony arrests and helped remove hundreds of pounds of drugs off the streets.
“PSD Hondo was a true warrior. And his actions last night assured his loving friend and partner Ben would be able to return home to his wife, children and HPD family,” Police Chief Troy Carr stated at a press conference barely holding back tears.
A public memorial will be held for Hondo on Saturday February 29 at Harriman High School.
