Jet hits and kills brown bear on Alaska runway

Over the weekend, a Boeing 737-700 hit a mother brown bear on the runway at the Yakutat Airport in Eastern Alaska. At the last minute, the pilots spotted the two bears crossing into the plane’s path as they were slowing down while landing.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, the ground crew had followed standard operating procedures and checked the runway before giving final clearance for the jet to land. The pilot “felt an impact,” and a brown bear was later found about 20 feet from the center of the runway. A two-year-old bear cub accompanying her mother was not injured and was discovered on the side of the runway.

“The nose gear missed the bears, but the captain felt an impact on the left side after the bears passed under the plane,” a statement from Alaska Airlines said.

The left engine cowl of the plane sustained damaged, and the plane remained in Yakutat Sunday. No passengers or crew were injured.

Such heartbreaking news, but all so the results of civilization taking over wildlife habitats.
