Hundreds of dead loggerhead sea turtles were recently discovered on the same stretch of beach in northwestern Mexico where dozens of deceased sea lions were previously found. According to Sky News, a total of 351 dead turtles were found on the beaches of Baja California. The Associated Press reports that 137 dead sea lions were found in the same area earlier this month.
The Mexican Center for Environmental Law and the Center for Biological Diversity cites net and line fishing as the culprit for the sea turtle deaths, though no sign of injuries from nets or fishing lines were discovered on the bodies of the dead sea lions. Tissue samples from the sea lions are being examined to determine exactly how they died.
But environmentalists still believe the nets are behind the rash of sea turtle deaths. The turtles were found in an area that is supposed to be protected, but there are fears that regulations are not being enforced. Mario Sánchez of the center for environmental law, said:
We are concerned that the deaths of loggerhead turtles is getting worse in the Gulf of Ulloa and that environmental authorities have still not enforced the applicable regulations.

Perhaps there has been illegal dumping of toxic wastes & before this latest instance, the dead animals were “at sea” & no one knew…… but now, many of the animal victims of this illegal dumping are “landing ashore” & it’s being investigated……..
