In Houston, Texas a man with a history of violence was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday for choking and hitting a dog. Michael Wayne Johnson, 48, was arrested in October after witnesses saw him abusing a small dog.

According to KhouNews, the dog, a Corgi-Australian shepherd mix named “Old Man,” was lifted off from the ground by his neck, choked and repeatedly punched in the face by Johnson. Fortunately, Old Man survived the ordeal and was placed for adoption with BARC Animal Shelter.

Johnson pleaded guilty in April to cruelty to a non-livestock animal and asked to be sentenced by a judge. He could have faced up to ten years in prison. Johnson has a previous record of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Finally, some abusive owners are being held responsible.
