A horse in  Weld County, Colorado, was so badly neglected that it could no longer stand and had to be euthanized. According to 9 News, the horse’s owner, identified as John Thomas, has been cited for animal cruelty.

It was Jodi Messinch who first exposed the cruel situation on social media, writing:

This horse was discovered this afternoon on CR 68 in Weld County by a sheep shearer on site to shear sheep. I was notified that the horse could not stand up, look closely at the front hooves.

Animal control initially refused to put the suffering horse out of its misery for days, but the sheriff got involved after being inundated with calls from the public. An updated post explains what was initially happening:

Now the Sheriff states they will not wait till Saturday but return to this horse this morning. They will allow this woman to kill this horse and file no charges against her. We offered to take the horse. This woman committed a crime, animal abuse is a crime and she should be charged with felony abuse/neglect. No excuse for a horse to be allowed to linger in this condition.

A veterinarian who arrived to the property determined that the horse’s hooves had not been trimmed in years causing so much pain that getting up became impossible. It was determined that the horse could not be saved and humane euthanasia was the only option.

Thomas is facing a misdemeanor citation which could result in up to 18 months in jail and/or a $5000 fine.

  1. I can’t understand why anyone would let their horse get into this state (our horses have farrier visits every 8 weeks)……
I also don’t understand why the hooves couldn’t have been trimmed so the horse could stand without pain….. on rare occasions I have seen horses with these overgrown hooves & once they were trimmed, the horse could stand and get help returning to an improved state…..
Poor horse, I am so sorry humans failed you in every way possible……. I know that you are absolutely in Heaven. Please look for Sailor (a gorgeous bay gelding). He will show you all of the best grazing areas and most scenic trails in Heaven!!!
The POS who neglected you will burn in Hell forever for their cruelty.
