In Kershaw County, South Carolina, a family dog is being hailed as a hero. Even after he was shot in the neck by a robbery suspect on Saturday night, the dog continued to chase the man off of the family’s property.

According to Fox News  and the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call about a violation of a restraining order at a home in Camden. Kevin Devon Young, 24, broke into the home and pointed a gun at his ex-girlfriend. Young allegedly shot the dog in the neck after the pooch bit him in the hand.

Sheriff Lee Boan says the dog was doing what any dog would. “He was protecting his house,” said Boan. “The dog was defending his property just like any homeowner would do. The dog ran off and it was almost 24 hours later when the family found the dog and got him to the vet.

Our thought was he probably ran off and died but to hear that he was found and taken to the vet was good news for everybody.”

A young teenage girl was able to get out of the home safely.

Young was denied bail after appearing in court and has been charged with shooting at a deputy and wounding the dog. The dog is currently being treated at a local veterinary clinic and is expected to survive.
