At the entrance of a high-speed train tunnel between Kassel and Gottingen, Germany, a grieving swan refused to budge from the train tracks after her mate disappeared and assumed to have been killed.

According to the Guardian, police think the swan’s mate became disoriented or lost near the entrance of the tunnel and thought to have had been electrocuted by an overhead power line.

“It’s mourning companion was still sitting in the dangerous area of the tracks,” the Federal Police at Kassel said in a statement.

Officers tried to lure the bird off the tracks, but were unsuccessful, and as a result 23 trains were delayed for nearly an hour as the fire department used special equipment to safely remove the swan from the tracks.

The swan survived and was later freed near the River Fulda.
