The Grand Teton National Park will use shotguns blasted from helicopters to kill mountain goats early next week. The park will be closed to visitors.

According to the Idaho State Journal, on January 12, the closure will affect the South Middle, Grand Teton, Mount Owen, Teewinot Mountain peaks, Jackson, Leigh, String, Jenny lakes, Rolling Thunder Mountain and Eagle Rest peaks.

Non-native mountain goats will be the target in order to protect the native bighorn sheep. It is estimated 100 of the mountain goats will be killed so they do not compete with the bighorn sheep hunting for food. A news release stated:

“In order to aid in the conservation of a native and vulnerable population of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in the Teton Range, the National Park Service is implementing a recently finalized management plan to remove nonnative mountain goats from the park via lethal and nonlethal means.”

The mountain goats were originally brought into the area after migrating from the nearby Snake River Refuge as hunting opportunities.
