As Turkey settles into the new normal and prepare to stay home in order to contain the spread of Covid-19, the government has taken a positive step in order to care for the country’s thousands of stray animals.

According to the Daily Sabah,  the ministry has directed local governments to leave food at designated areas on a regular basis so stray dogs and cats will not starve. In the past, local residents, businesses, restaurants and bakeries had fed the animals, and now that fewer people are venturing outdoors, the animals are hungry. Also, a mandatory curfew for older people has hindered the scraps the strays have relied upon in the past.

Most of the animals have ear tags, a sign that they have been recorded by the municipality and treated by vets.

“Food and water will be left at the living environments of street animals such as parks and gardens and particularly animal shelters,” the ministry said.

In Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, there are 162,970 stray cats and 128,900 dogs. Stray dogs and cats in Turkey are vaccinated by local municipalities’ veterinarians and are also regularly fed. Turkish society has always called upon their citizens to care for stray animals. In addition, food and water will also be brought to the animal shelters.

Even though health experts have repeatedly stated the coronavirus pandemic is spread from human to human, more pets have been  abandoned. These house pets have no chance of survival, since the strays are much more aggressive when it comes to receiving food.

The Turkish Animal Group (T.A.G.) has been out helping and their supplies are running low.

We used today 1/2 a 15 kilo bag of cat food and 3 x 15 kilo bags of dog food used on street animals. Our 2 x shelter dogs and at home dogs and cats in foster eat 9 bags a day. (200) It is a lot of food and we are close to running out!
Please help us to carry on feeding them. They rely on us.
