Eight stranded Rothschild’s giraffes on an island in Lake Baringo, trapped because of the flooding rising water levels  and separating them from the resources they need to survive, are being rescued – one by one – as animal advocacy groups work together to bring these peaceful and nearly extinct animals to safety.

According to Save the Giraffes Now,  two more conservation groups including the Kenya Wildlife Service and the African organization, Northern Rangelands Trust, have all been working together to built a barge big enough to accommodate a giraffe and float them back to the Kenya mainland. The barge consisted of a rectangular steel structure with empty drums and reinforced sides to prevent the giraffes from jumping out.

Two of the eight giraffes have been transported on the four-mile journey from the island and are now in a 4,400 protected acre sanctuary doing well.

Asiwa, the lonely female giraffe, finally arrives at her new home.
She was trapped and isolated from the remaining giraffe on the lower part of Longicharo Island due to rising water.
Asiwa, has always been a priority for the team on the ground, as she was the most vulnerable. It is a relief for all involved to have got her safely across to the mainland and we are sure she is enjoying the space in her new home!
Over the next few days two other giraffe are due to be moved, the rest will follow in the coming months.”
And if you’re wondering, how does one convince a 16-foot giraffe to get on a barge, the animals were introduced to the barge weeks ago. Then there was the capture of them. (Copy and paste the url into your browser)

The rest of the giraffes left on the island are now priorities; there are only 800 Nubian giraffes left in Kenya and 2,000 on the continent all together. In meantime, the giraffes are being kept alive with food being provided to them along with routine health checks.
In 2011, the giraffes had been introduced to the island to keep them safe from poachers and give them a chance to increase their dwindling populations.
