In Staten Island, New York, BJ sits and waits in his kennel at New York City Animal Care Centers to die. His life is about to go dark, and even though he has that adorable squishy face most dog lovers can’t resist, his owners decided he just wasn’t worth the trouble.
Bulldogs grow up and they are known to be stubborn, grumpy and get stuck in their ways. At the shelter, BJ is so miserable -he barks and seems agitated, but once out of his cage and outdoors, this eight-year-old transforms into a different bully.
“He was propping himself up onto staff, shaking his booty for butt scratches and eagerly took treats. He gave them 8 years of bulldoggie heaven – they gave him a death sentence. He’s not perfect and didn’t like being told what to do by the teenager in the house, but that is no reason to give up on him! He needs a bulldog-savvy person right now! NOT RESERVED BJ.”
A staff member described this boy:
“This hungry hippo is only happy when you are presenting him with treats. He takes them ever so gently with his adorable underbite. Treats are the way to his heart and the perfect strategy to go from a stranger to a friend. He is a master at sit and down, and can even give paw. This older pup needs a new home so if you want to host this mushy faced boy at your house, ask about him at the Staten Island ACC!”

DJ was surrendered to the shelter by his owners. They provided the following information:
BJ, ID# 94583, 8 years old, 56 lbs, Unaltered Male
Staten Island ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Brown Brindle / White
Owner Surrender Reason: BJ tried to bite the 14 year old child of the owner while being on a walk
Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Only
No children (under 13)
Single-pet home
Recommend no dog parks

“Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends BJ be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow BJ to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing BJ to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior BJ presents with outside of the care centers.”
