On Sunday, five malnourished and sickly beagles were seized by the Pennsylvania State Police after responding to a call concerning two beagles running in the roadway in Schuylkill Haven.
According to SkookNews, the owner of the dogs, Brian Morgan, 61, surrender five senior beagles – all determined to be malnourished, living in unsuitable conditions and in poor health.
The dogs have all been under the care of Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA.
“All of these beagles haven’t been to the vet in over 5 years. Nails overgrown, bad teeth, lots of sores and skin issues mammary tumors on both females and one male has an undescended testicle that will require special surgeries in addition to their regular sterilizations. One dog is also special needs with a back injury from when he was younger and has a bad eye that may need to be removed and get an umbilical hernia repaired,” the organization posted on their Facebook page with photos of the dogs and the emergency care they were receiving.
The emaciated beagles are on a special diet to help gain weight and have been treated with fluid therapy at the veterinarian. All of the dogs have been getting baths, deworming and flea treatments. They have a long way to go yet and everyone has to start from the beginning even though they’re all seniors.
The dogs will be made available for adoption as soon as they are healthy enough.
Pennsylvania State Police are handling charges for this case. Morgan has been charged with animal cruelty.
