It wasn’t a good morning for Lola the chocolate Labrador retriever when she somehow became stranded on a chunk of ice on the Sheyenne River in Horace, North Dakota on Wednesday morning. A woman had been out on a walk when she spotted the dog sitting in the middle of the river on a slab of ice.
The Good Samaritan called 911 for help, and out came the heroes from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and West Fargo Fire Department. According to the rescuers, the dog was at least 30 feet from the shoreline.
And that’s when the firefighters donned their water suits and with a safety rope, waded into the river to help the poor scared pup. One of the members of the West Fargo Fire Department was able to climb onto the ice and inched towards the dog named Lola. Once he had a hold of her, they waded back to the shore together where others were able to get the frightened dog back on land.
Lola has been returned to her family.
“Through investigation, it appears the dog defeated the security measures put in place to secure the dog on its’ property,” the fire department reported on their Facebook page along with a video of the rescue.
