In Walterboro, South Carolina, just two days after New Year’s 2020 began, a father and his nine-year-old daughter were shot to death by a fellow hunter who had mistaken them for deer.

In a statement by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources on Twitter, the message stated:

“NEWS RELEASE: Four hunters were attempting to move deer, also known as driving deer, near Barracada Road in Walterboro when two hunters were shot after being mistaken for a deer.

Those two hunters succumbed to their injuries.

SCDNR continues to investigate this incident.”

The victims, Kim Drawdy, 30 and his daughter Lauren Drawdy, 9, had been in a hunting party of four and had been aiming at their prey when gunshots were heard.

The incident happened on private property, and it is not mandatory for hunters to wear bright orange clothing, but encouraged to do so, which helps hunters identify humans from their prey. Wednesday was to be the last day of deer hunting season.
