Over 60 dogs have been rescued from “horrific conditions” thanks to a family member who reached out to the authorities for help.

On Tuesday, New Jersey’s Monmouth County SPCA issued a release about the rescue effort which ensued:

Today we were on scene as 60+ small dogs were rescued from living in absolutely horrific conditions in Belford, NJ. A call came into our cruelty hotline from who turned out to be a family member of the owner of these dogs.

Pregnant dogs and newborn puppies were among those rescued by officials. The animal welfare agency described the terrible situation:

Many of these poor animals were so matted in their own urine and feces that they could barely walk in their small, excrement filled kennels and were forced to drink out of filthy water bowls, if any was accessible at all.

Adding:

Our team spent hours inside the sweltering house, with ammonia so strong it burned their eyes, in full PPE until every single dog was out safely recovered and brought back to our shelter.

The  shelter was assisted by the Middletown Township Police Department and Middletown Animal Control. The agencies are pursuing :the highest count of charges allowable by law” against the owner of the dogs.
