A family in Fairfield is devastated after their family dog was accidentally euthanized by animal control on Friday because an officer thought their beloved pet was a coyote.

According to WtnhNews, Fairfield police stated they had received a call on Wednesday evening about a coyote in distress on the side of the road. When animal control arrived, they thought the 13-year-old Shiba Inu was a coyote and called state officials on how to proceed. Because there were no facilities to rehabilitate a coyote, the animal was to be euthanized.

On Wednesday, the owner of the dog had been posting photos on social media about their missing pet. And on Thursday when the owner arrived at the shelter to claim their dog, it was then determined that had been their dog and not a coyote – the dog had already been euthanized.

Officials have met with the family and are investigating. The animal control officer has been placed on administrative leave while police investigate.

  1. If “Animal Control” can’t tell the difference between a dog and a coyote, then they don’t need to be in the business of animals, I would be suing the pants off this idiot and making sure they were never allowed near another dog!

  2. Something is VERY wrong if “animal control” can’t distinguish between a domestic dog and a wild coyote…….

I think the staff needs some remedial training and quickly…….

Condolences to the family on their horrible loss……. whoever let their pet loose will definitely need counseling (& even then will feel guilty for the rest of their life)…….

Precious treasure I know that you are absolutely in Heaven. Please look for MacKitty and join his wonderful snuggle buddies group and RIP amongst loving friends.

  3. Oh God, I HATE THIS WORLD! I HATE the evil that ALL those in charge of the rule of law are ALLOWING TO GROW UNCHECKED. ALL this WHILE sheriff’s deputies go on to PRIVATE property and SHOOT CHILDREN’S DOGS and NO ONE GIVES a SHIT! NO ONE! I DO wish someone would RELEASE several NUCLEAR BOMBS to extinguish the ENTIRE world. I can’t take this ANYMORE! Dear God, PLEASE INSPIRE SOMEONE TO SET OFF NUCLEAR BOMBS AND KILL us ALL.
