A massive fire the broke out overnight in Dade City, Florida, claimed the lives of an estimated 240,000 chickens. According to multiple sources, the chickens were held in three different barns that housed egg-laying chickens.

As reported by Tampa Bay News, fire departments responded to barns owned by Cal-Maine Foods, one of the largest suppliers of eggs in the country. Exploding propane tanks complicated the fire fighting efforts at the barns.

NBC News reports that the barns held many young chickens who were being raised to produce eggs when they matured. Though the loss is massive, it is not expected to impact egg production/supply.

  1. How awful……. massive loss of life….. even chicken lives matter…… not sure which is worse: to die in a fire or live as a “battery egg layer until future slaughter date as an “old hen””???
