The discovery of an emaciated grizzly bear, along the central B.C. coast in Canada, has sparked concerns. The CATCA Environmental and Wildlife Society posted the shocking image of the deceased bear and expressed concern for what is happening to the grizzly’s food source:
The decline in Pacific salmon stocks are a deadly combination of climate change, overfishing, and freshwater habitat destruction.
Adding information about the salmon stock decline:
WWSS says: Salmon farming in B.C. has contributed to the decline of salmon stocks: 1) Fish farm diseases threaten wild salmon 2) Salmon farms spread salmon lice to wild salmon 3) Farm salmon often escape and out-compete native species for resources (Source: https://watershedwatch.ca/)
John Smith, a fisheries supervisor, commented on the bear’s death:
“The poor bear starved to death,”
He noted that several other bears in the area have been found, still alive, but underweight. Jake Smith the Mamalilikulla guardian watchman program manager, said:
First Nations are slowly losing our resources like salmon, which has a huge domino effect on our wildlife. If we have no salmon, then we have no bears, eagles, whales, no tourism industry etc.” Adding: “When a grizzly dies of starvation it’s not natural, it’s a man-made disaster.”
