In India’s Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district, forest officials spent more than 12 hours on Friday rescuing an elephant that had fallen into a well. The pachyderm had strayed into the village from the neighboring forest when he fell into the well that had been covered with brush.
According to the Guardian, two other elephants had also fallen into wells as the fast growing urban development have left the elephants less forest grounds to roam and find food. It was late in the evening when the elephant was found in the well. He had toppled 50 feet down after having been chased by a pack of dogs.
Villagers cleared away the bushes and tried to pump the water out of the well, but the frightened elephant attacked the water pipes pumping out the water. Coconut tree leaves were dropped into the well to feed the elephant while the rescue plan was formulated.
Eventually the elephant was sedated with the help of area doctors, and then the plan to save it continued with the use of a crane. The rescue equipment consisted of two excavators, trucks and cranes; belts and ropes carefully attached and wrapped around the heavy load.
After hauling him up and the sedatives wore off, area veterinarians found only minor injuries. He was later released into the forest.
