El Paso man charged with abuse after dog died from tick infestation

In El Paso, Texas, a 32-year-old was arrested on Friday after the El Paso Police Department Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit charged the man with animal cruelty after his two-year-old dog died from a painful tick infestation.

Alberto Cruz Bocanegra faces charges for the death of the Australian Blue Heeler named Kira, who experts say died a horrific, slow and painful death. According to KtsmNews, Bocanegra was previously warned to take care of the dog after authorities investigated. The defendant did not follow up on Kira’ condition and health, and when found the dog had died having lived in deplorable conditions, in heat over 100 degrees and no food or water available. Her lifeless body was found covered with ticks.

A necropsy determined her cause of death as tick anemia and Ehrlichiosis – a disease caused by ticks.

Bocanegra is currently being held in the El Paso County Detention Center in lieu of a $5,000 bond,

Rest in peace Kira.
