Although Italy is currently under lockdown to help fight the spread of COVID-19, the wildlife didn’t get the message nor do they obviously care. Photos on social media have suggested the waterways and the air might be a lot cleaner now and “nature just hit the reset button.”

According to Esquire, the canals that normally were crowded with tourists and boat traffic are now abandoned. Videos and photos showing the canal waters clear and what was once an oddity to see any wildlife on the waterways has now changed. Social media user, “Jack” spotted a dolphin in the canal explaining it was the first time in 60 years.

New reports show more fish swimming and even the return of swans.

A Facebook group, Venezia Pulita (Clean Venice) has brought a small glimmer of light to an otherwise very difficult situation. The mayor of Venice, however doesn’t agree the return of wildlife is due to cleaner water. His office stated the water just looks cleaner because there is less traffic  allowing sediment to settle at the bottom undisturbed. Water quality may not have improved, however air quality has improved the mayor’s office announced.

  1. It’s actually believed that the dolphins were photographed in Sardinia, NOT Venice. Not sure about the swans.
While there’s no question that some animals may show up in areas where they haven’t been seen in a long time, it might be more likely because there aren’t people around to bother them. It’s a little too soon for air and water quality to be THAT much cleaner.
