Dogs and cats can not spread the novel coronavirus to humans according to experts; nor can a human give the Covid-19 to their pets either.

In an out pour of internet panic after a 17-year-old Pomeranian in China tested “weakly” positive for the virus after its owner came down with the illness, the dog died only a few days after he was allowed to return home. Just this week, a German shepherd tested barely positive, however a dog in the same household tested negative while in quarantine after their owner came down with the virus.

According to Ktla5News, Dr. John Williams, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, states to the best of current scientific knowledge, we are not going to get the virus from our pets and it’s not just an opinion. Dr. Williams has studies various coronaviruses for years.

“This is not simply my opinion. I’m a virologist, an infectious disease doctor, and I’m just saying there’s no scientific evidence for that,” stated Dr. Williams.

In addition, Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventative medicine and infectious disease at Vanderbuilt University School of Medicine agrees with Dr. Williams and questions if the Pomeranian even tested positive since it tested negative on repeated occasions.

As for the death of the Pomeranian, he was 17-years-old and just the stress of having been taken away from his owner and placed in an isolated cage may have contributed to his death. No one ever supplied any additional information about the dog’s general health either – 17 is a very advanced age for any dog.

Thousands of dogs and cats have obviously been tested for the spread of coronavirus, and there has been no evidence produced. With the social isolation most of the country is going through now, Dr. Williams is in agreement with pet lovers – hug your dog, pet your cat and stay calm.

Take your dog for a walk – it’s good to get outside. Just be reminded to keep your distance from other people.
