In Cape Town, South Africa, the pressures of the lock down due to the Covid-19 pandemic has caused some people to throw away their pets. The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) continues to make an appeal to citizens not to dispose of their pets inhumanely. The recent rescue of one dog, found in a drain in Eerste River this week, emphasized the plea.

According to the rescue organization, the Labrador mix had been stuck in the drain for quite awhile before someone heard her crying for help. The whimpers could not have been very loud since the dog had been so close to just giving up. Had it not been for the Good Samaritan, who was an essential services worker and the reduced amount of traffic, this poor dog would have suffered there until she died.

Inspector Jeffrey Mfini climbed down to help her, and what he saw was shocking. Not only was the dog severely underweight, but blood stained stones were around her indicating someone had thrown stones at her also.

“This is an inexcusable act of cruelty and so unnecessary,” the animal advocacy posted on their Facebook page. “The SPCA continues to take in unwanted animals during lockdown, and we are only a phone call away…”

The dog suffered external injuries to her body and to her eyes. An investigation is currently underway. The dog is under the care of the CoGH and is expected to recover.

The organization is asking for the public’s help; anyone with information about this incident is asked to please come forward. Call 0217004158 /9 during office hours and on 0833261604 after hours.
