Dog owner who punched his dog in the face banned from owning animals

In Darlington, United Kingdom, a pet owner who “lost his temper” in December 2019 with his dog and repeatedly punched his pet in the face for running near the road has been banned from owning animals for the next two years.

According to the Daily Mail, Joseph Pocklington, 29, was videoed hitting his dog by a woman in Darlington, County Durham who approached him and took the dog. After filming the disturbing incident and removing the dog, the witness called authorities.

The video shows Pocklington sitting with his black dog facing him. Suddenly he jerked the leashed dog towards him and repeatedly punched it while the frightened dog did his best to pull away.

Authorities found Pocklington asleep in a nearby church yard, and he told police he had given his dog “a few slaps” because the dog had been running into traffic. After police showed Pocklington the video, he stated he couldn’t remember hurting the dog while describing himself as a “dog lover.” He has been known to abuse alcohol.

On Tuesday, Pocklington pleaded guilty to one count of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. He was also ordered to perform 12-months of community service along with fines and court costs.
