A dog locked up since 2017 will be “executed” following a judge’s ruling on the case. Susan Santics’ dog, Punky, bit a woman on the leg in August 2017 and he was subsequently seized by Vancouver Animal Services. Santics recounts the incident which landed her dog in “jail.”
In August 2017 at an off-leash dog park, Punky, then a two and a half-year old, bit a woman below her knee. She was treated in a hospital ER Department and released. No stitches were applied.
Adding details about the conditions that Punky has been kept for all this time:
He has been impounded in a small kennel ever since, with minor exercise twice a day, in a slightly larger area. I am only allowed to see him (from outside his kennel) once per week for 30 minutes.
On Thursday, Santics’ bid to keep Punky alive ended when a judge decided that he could not be rehabilitated, and that he must be euthanized, reports CBC News.
After the ruling, animal rights lawyer Victoria Shroff stated:
I’m absolutely gutted. I had hoped we would be able to move forward with this case and bring animal law to the highest court in Canada. This is very, very sad news indeed because it’s the end of the road for Punky … He will be executed.”
The city prosecutor has granted a request for Punky to be able to spend a bit of time with his owner before he is put down. The Australian cattle dog has at least through Wednesday of next week.
