A dog is lucky to be alive after his owners abandoned him, leaving him tied to a fence when they moved out of state. The Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter shared a press release from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office about the cruel situation involving a husky named Carter.

According to the release, 27-year-old Curtis Swan and 29-year-old Aaleyah Clay, left the husky tied to a fence in the backyard and moved to Georgia. The release recounted what is known about the situation:

On Friday, November 20, an Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey animal control officer was dispatched to a home on the 300 block of White Street regarding a welfare check for a possibly abandoned dog in need of medical attention, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Patricia Cronin, the Prosecutor’s Office’s designated animal cruelty liaison. There, it was learned that the dog, a young male Husky, had a severe, infected open wound encircling a large portion of his neck, a product of being tied to the backyard fence; the officer then reported the matter to the Roselle Police Department.

The couple allegedly told a neighbor that they would eventually return to get the dog, but a date was not specified. The dog was tied to the fence for five days before being found by an animal control officer. The release details what happened:

The shelter updated Facebook followers about the rescued dog’s condition on Thursday, writing:

He is currently with us at AHS/Popcorn Park and doing very well. He receives daily laser therapy treatments on his neck wound and is also on medications for pain and infection. He is recovering nicely and is a sweet, happy, friendly dog.
