In Sonoma County, California, a Santa Rosa man was arrested on Wednesday after he was accused of intentionally backing his Maserati into a dog walker and the dog he was walking. Juan Mendoza-Meza faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and felony animal cruelty.
According to the Sonoma County’s Sheriff Office press release, the victim had been walking his terrier on Monday morning along Las Lomas Road in Boyes Hot Springs when a white Maserati approached at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle passed, the dog walker yelled at the driver to slow down.
The vehicle stopped, and the driver put the car into reverse and accelerated; he struck both the victim and the dog. The dog died at the scene, and the man had to be hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle sped away.
When the information about the car and driver were posted on social media, the vehicle was discovered in Santa Rosa. The trunk area of the vehicle had significant damage and was towed to the sheriff’s office. Mendoza-Meza was then arrested. He remains in custody without bond.
The Sheriff’s Office offered thanks to the community members who contacted authorities with information leading to the arrest.
