A Florida man was arrested and has been convicted after his dog was found seriously injured from being left tied to a basketball post for weeks. As reported by NBC 2 News, 40-year-old Salvador Carbajal Garcia, of Lehigh Acres, was arrested in March 2019 for aggravated animal cruelty after a Lee County animal control officer found his dog, Walter, with a severely embedded leash in his neck.
Walter had continued to pull on the tether in an effort to reach a BMW parked in the driveway – the dog had no other shelter and was trying to escape the elements. A veterinarian who testified at trial stated that the wound on Walter’s neck was at least 25 days old.
State Attorney Amira Fox stated:
An animal owner must meet the basic responsibilities when it comes to the care of a pet; food, water, and shelter. Animal cruelty is against the law in Florida and those who violate the law will be prosecuted.
Garcia will be sentenced on March 2.
