A dog died in York County, South Carolina, after his owner forgot that he was chained to the back of his truck. As reported by the Herald Online, on Wednesday, deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office were alerted to the deadly incident by witnesses who reported seeing a dog being dragged behind a truck traveling on U.S. 21.

Deputies were able to locate the vehicle at a nearby job site and found a man tending to his injured dog. The man stated that he forgot the dog was secured to the back of the vehicle. Deputies decided not to charge the man, even though the dog died, because they believe it was “clearly an accident.”

The authorities stated:

The investigation showed that what happened was clearly an accident and no charges were filed because there was no criminal intent. The owner did not intend to harm the dog.”

The dog who had to be euthanized for severe injuries was described as a Weimaraner. The owner received a citation for violating the leash ordinance.

  1. A real responsible pet owner, I hope he never gets another dog. You shouldn’t be tying them to the back of your car in the first place, let alone forget about them!
