A faithful dog in Glendale, California, alerted a city worker after his owner fell in her yard. As reported by KTLA News, Kirk White of Glendale Integrated Waste Management, noticed that Gwendola Johnson’s dog, Sandy, was not in his usual spot in the window when he came to help collect trash on July 10.

Sandy was on the side of the house with his 88-year-old owner when White came to the yard, and when Gwendola told Sandy to go get White, the dog knew what to do.  Sandy ran out to White and began barking – thankfully, the city employee was intuitive enough to know that the dog was trying to tell him something.

White followed Sandy, telling KTLA what he found:

“She was on the floor, unable to get up. I know it was very hot that Friday… seeing someone in the sun, that wasn’t right at all.”

White helped Gwendola up and ensured that she was okay. Johnson’s granddaughter Cheryl Malvar, watched security footage of what happened and cried when she saw Sandy’s efforts, as well as White’s. She said:

“Kirk actually made an effort. Not everybody does. He investigated and he was aware enough to know it was off,” she said. “We love him. He’ll always have friends here.”

As for White, he is humble about his part in the rescue effort. He tells KTLA:

Just helping another human, that’s what we’re supposed to do,” he said. “After this, I was thinking I want a dog like Sandy. We can learn something from animals.”
