This week, a crated dog was abandoned outside of an animal shelter in Georgia. The cruel incident was recounted by the Glynn County Animal Control, which wrote:
To the couple who just abandoned this dog to sit outside overnight unprotected at our gate, you and your vehicle were caught on our security camera and we will be doing everything we can to find you and charge you with animal abandonment.
The animal welfare agency added:
We have prevented this sweet dog from suffering overnight by bringing him into our shelter. He will be safe with us until he can find a loving family who will care for him for the rest of his life.
People commenting on the shelter’s Facebook thread expressed dismay and anger that the dog was abandoned in such a manner. However, some people did not see anything wrong with leaving a dog outside overnight – because it was near the shelter. One person wrote:
Man. Idk maybe it’s just me but setting a dog in a crate with a bowl of water outside the animal control is like a desperate last ditch effort out of love.
Think about all the numerous things that they could’ve done…
And though there were people who were in agreement with that thought process, others pointed out that the dog could have been surrendered during normal shelter hours – ensuring that the dog would be safe and taken care of.
