Disturbing images of rhino in captivity in circus causes social media outrage

In the oldest city in France, Marseilles may soon ban circuses that use animals as part of their acts. Benoit Payan, the first deputy mayor of Marseille, posted the disturbing images and video of a rhinoceros displaying erratic and atypical behavior – most likely a result of having been held in captivity for decades.

According to Payan’s Facebook page, Romulo, the rhinoceros has been held in captivity in a small cage for 23 years before being moved to a larger area. In the video he can be seen walking around and around in a circle without stopping – a disturbing behavior for any animal.

“In Marseille we will ban circuses with animals!

This rhino is called Romulo and spent 23 years in a circus, locked in a tiny enclosure. Since his release, he’s been going around all the time. These images are unbearable and say the distress and abuse of these animals.

As more and more cities around the world, Marseille will be committed to animal protection!,” Payan posted on both Facebook and Twitter.
