A baby bird caught its legs in a disposable face mask, but luckily was discovered and rescued on Sunday in South End after the RSPCA rushed him to the South Essex Wildlife Hospital.

The seagull was treated at the hospital for swelling to its legs and joints. A Facebook post from the animal advocacy organization hopefully will bring awareness to the danger of tossing old masks away on the ground.

“Another sad victim of Covid-19. A young gull with a disposable face mask tangled round its legs. As it has been there a while the poor bird’s limbs and joints are swollen. Hopefully with the corrected veterinary care he will soon recover,” the South Essex Wildlife Hospital posted on Facebook.

We can do better.

  1. Poor bird, hope he recovers fully. I see those creepy face diapers every day littering the streets. These masks are ridiculous…everyone should refuse to comply with these shamdemic rules. Get back to your normal life…don’t accept any “new normal” dictated to you by extreme political interests. Medical tyranny is no way to live, not at all.

  2. Whenever I discard anything that might entangle an animal, bird, or marine life, I cut the loop or string into pieces. With the masks, detach the elastic from the mask.

    • What in my comment is objectionable? Why solicit comments if it’s to be censored needlessly? It’s a waste of my time to bother.

      • We don’t censor comments unless they are racist, obscene or pornographic. All comments however are approved by our staff, and that is done periodically.

  3. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DISPOSE OF A MASK BY THROWING IT ON THE GROUND ANYWAY?! HAVE THE LUNATICS ESCAPED FROM THE
    ASYLUM?!
