In desperation, a Texas zoo turned to the public for help to get meat for animals who are being impacted by the coronavirus pandemic shut downs. As reported by KVUE News, the Capital of Texas Zoo issued the plea for help after a steep drop in donations resulting from group cancellations to the property.
Zoo founder, Michael Hicks, tells the news agency:
“We have lost many thousands of dollars in the last couple of weeks.”
The social media outreach quickly resulted in an outpouring of generosity from area residents. On March 19, the zoo thanked those who helped, writing:
Hey Y’all! We are so moved on the AMAZING outcome of donations for meat we forgot to ask, if anyone could help with some produce. We have lots of littles that like fruits and veggies and highly depend on them for their diets. We appreciate each and every one of you, Thank You from all of us at Capital of Texas Zoo! 🐵🍌 🐰🥕 🐷🍉

If anyone would like to donate deep freezers we would be so grateful!
The animals’ needs are met for the time being, but as the pandemic continues, so will its impact on the zoo. Hicks said:
We are still cash poor. Spring break is usually our biggest week of the year and as you can guess we had very few people through this year, and we’ve had a full month’s worth of field trips and outreach programs that have canceled.
