For t he last 30 years it has been illegal to own a pit bull breed in the city of Denver. On Monday, the Denver City Council voted 7-4 to allow owners to register their pit bulls with the Denver Animal Protection and obtain a breed-restricted license.

According to Fox News, owners will be required to provide the name and address of the dog, have him/her microchipped, vaccinated and neutered or spayed. In addition, the owner will supply two emergency contacts. An annual fee will be required to obtain a license.

Additional conditions also included notifying authorities if the dog escapes from his home, if the dog dies or he bites someone. If there are no violations for three years, the owners will have the option to remove the breed-restricted license and license the dog under the same requirements as other breeds in Denver.

A 1989 law banned the breed from the city. The ban still remains in the nearby cities of Aurora, Commerce City, Lone Tree, Fort Lupton and Louisville.

If approved by Mayor Michael Hancock, the new law will take effect in 90 days.
