Three bear cubs have been orphaned after their mother was shot and killed in Sevierville, Tennessee. As reported by WBIR News, a man shot the mother bear when she “aggressively” approached a woman and her dog.
Investigators learned that the bear ran towards the woman after she stepped off of her porch to take her dog for a walk. The bear swatted the woman’s dog out of the way and continued to approach – a man who lived at the woman’s residence came outside with a handgun and fired several times at the bear.
Though the man did not think he hit the bear, her body was found behind the residence the next day. The three bear cubs returned to their mother’s body and wildlife officers were able to capture them. The cubs, who are approximately four months of age, will be cared for until they can be released into the wild.
The man who shot the mother bear is not facing any charges because he fired the gun in self-defense.
