Animal abuse and cruelty uptick during pandemic

A significant uptick in animal cruelty calls is being blamed on the pandemic. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Harris County Animal Cruelty Task Force has seen a surge of animal cruelty cases, which is being attributed to stress from the current health crisis, lock downs, and “additional free time.”

According to the news agency, domestic abuse calls have spiked, with the Houston Police Department seeing a 40 percent increase in calls for immediate assistance. Human abuse and animal abuse are known to go hand-in-hand, and the abuser will often direct cruel behavior towards a pet to further control and/or traumatize the victim.

According to RNZ News, countries across the globe have seen a surge of domestic violence calls since the start of the pandemic related lock downs. Officials hope that people will reach out for help if abuse of humans, or animals, is suspected.
