A coyote rescued from the waters of Port Miami by the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was euthanized on Tuesday according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee. The animal was killed because he is a “non-native species” even though initial plans were to rehabilitate him at a nearby wildlife rescue.
According to the Wildlife Rescue of Dade County,the coyote was found in the water and first responders were able to take him to safety. The rescuers had to scare him out of his hiding place in the water and lasso him because the animal was scared, wild and nervous.
The initial plan was to send him to the rescue. Lloyd Brown had spent the morning making preparations for the animal.
“… Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. I told them that I would be glad to do so. They sent a law enforcement officer over to pick up a cage that they could use to transport the animal to me and we started moving animals around from cage to cage to make sure that we had an appropriate habitat for the incoming coyote,” Lloyd Brown of the wildlife sanctuary posted on the organization’s Facebook page.
Rumors soon began circulating among news media that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission had made the decision to euthanize the coyote.
“So, I began to call FWC; and after several people who did not know anything more than I did, I was told yes, the decision had been made by a Colonel at FWC to euthanize it because coyotes are nuisance animals.
Yes, We were supposed to receive the coyote.
No we never got an opportunity to touch it.
The decision to euthanize came from FWC not us. We were ready to take care of it

According to NbcMiami, Zoo Miami wildlife expert Ron Magill disagreed stating coyotes are one of the most adaptable animals in the world with at least 600 living in the Chicago environment and naturally occurring in Florida.
