A couple in Kalkaska County, Michigan, lost their lives while trying to save their dogs from a devastating house fire. As reported by Click on Detroit, Brian and Sheryl Curry had escaped their home early Thursday morning, but they went back in to try and save their dogs.

Tragically, the heroic and compassionate act was not successful – the dogs, and their devoted owners, all perished in the blaze. Kalkaska Township Fire Chief Derek Hogerheide told Up North Live:

It’s very unfortunate that they went back in but people love their animals and kids and some equate both as being the same thing so it’s hard to judge. I know they’re animal lovers, they’re good people so it’s very unfortunate we had them out and they made that decision to go back in.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
