A Tennessee couple was arrested after young puppies were found dying in a cage at their residence in Portland. As reported by Fox 17 News, Portland Police Department officers responded to a home on N. Harris Road on June 7 and found a litter of two-week-old puppies suffering from heat exhaustion in a cage.

The seven puppies had been left unattended outside for hours, without their mother, and were suffering from the heat and a lack of fluids. The responding officers tried to save the ailing puppies – first putting them into the shade, and then moving them to an air-conditioned police vehicle. CPR was attempted on one puppy, but it was too late and the pup died.

The puppies’ mother was also suffering from a mastitis infection and wasn’t able to nurse her babies. James C. Null and Crystal L. Williams were arrested on charges of animal cruelty, dog running at-large, and no rabies vaccinations.

The surviving puppies were taken in by animal control – their current status is unknown.
