A couple in Las Vegas, Nevada, is accused of allowing a dog to starve inside of an apartment. According to multiple sources, one dog died before help arrived; another was rescued from the residence, which was described as “smelling like death.”
The couple accused of the cruel act are identified as Hannah Carr, 21, and Kayla Barnum, 21. Their dogs, Cash and Venus, apparently were left without food and water for long periods of time while they were “celebrating at a hotel” after getting married, reports Fox 5 Vegas.
KTNV News reports that, in an interview, Barnum admitted to improperly caring for the dogs and blamed the neglect on their marriage, work, and caring for newborn twins.
Stax Studios Manager Natalie Hicks discovered the dogs on December 18 while conducting an inspection. Hicks cared for the one surviving dog until animal control could address the situation. Animal control found deplorable conditions inside of the residence and a veterinarian determined that Cash had lost nearly 45 pounds before dying in his cage.
LVMPD Detective Sigal commented on the suffering that is brought about from starvation, stating:
“Starving to death is immensely painful as the body craves nourishment. They body uses all fat reserves and muscles to attempt to stay alive. This process can be slow and agonizing.”
The couple was arrested and booked into jail. They are facing felony charges of willful and malicious torture and killing of animals.
