Bailey’s Bullies is a small independent rescue based in Alabama and run by Melissa Hughes. The rescue takes on primarily pit bulls and bully breeds with behavioral issues to keep them from being euthanized.
According to Melissa, 35,000 pit bull breeds are housed in shelters across the United States and most will not live to leave those shelters. Sadly, that ugly fate is better than the abuse many suffer at the hands of dog fighters.
Melissa singlehandedly runs the rescue on her own. This includes providing all transportation and supplies plus caring for all 34 dogs on her property. Two puppies are in a separate foster home. Although many of the dogs are put up for adoption once they are fully vetted, spayed, neutered, and rehabilitated, some of the dogs will live out their lives at the rescue due to behavioral issues.
Two puppies Astro and Elroy will soon be ready for adoption. Both were found dumped on the streets of Alabama to fend for themselves before being found by a Good Samaritans and brought to Bailey’s Bullies. Astro is a 9-10-week-old male pit bull mix. He is a confident little dog with a huge personality. He is also described as smart and taking to his basic obedience training like a pro. He is doing great with his pee pad and house training as well. Astro loves people and other animals. A home with another dog friend and children for him to bond/play would be the best fit for this active little pup.
Elroy is a 6-7 weeks old male mixed breed, possibly shepherd mix. Like Astro, Elroy is very smart, playful, and outgoing. He has a goofy little personality. He is also doing great with his pee pad training so far. Elroy will begin basic obedience training within the next few weeks. He is great with other animals and people of all sizes. He is just a happy little guy who loves to play.
The best fit for Elroy would be an active, outdoorsy family. A home with another dog companion and children would be the ideal. He would love to have someone to play/bond with at his new forever home.
Both puppies will be available to leave the rescue program in mid-December once they are old enough to have been neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, micro-chipped and started on a heartworm prevention.
Vito, a 4-5-year-old Staffie mix came to Bailey’s Bullies last spring after being abandoned by his previous owner. Vito is a special needs dog due to being blind. He gets around relatively well given his lack of vision. Vito is described as a mellow dog who enjoys sunbathing, naps, car rides, belly rubs and treats.
Unfortunately, Vito is dog selective and a resource guarder so he will have to be fed separately from any other pets in the home. It is not known how he will react to cats or small dogs. Vito walks well on a leash, is crate/house trained, knows his basic commands, and loves people.
Before Astro, Elroy and Vito are adopted there will be a home check, vet reference, adoption contract and adoption fee.
