As the deadly novel coronavirus continues to spread worldwide, one city in China is moving towards a ban on the consumption of dog meat, as well as other “exotic” meats, including that from snakes, frogs and turtles, reports the Daily Mail.
Shenzhen, a city of over 12 million people in southeastern China, proposed the ban on dog meat (and more) this week. It is believed that the virus, dubbed COVID-19, started in one of Wuhan’s so-called wet markets, where people buy a wide range of exotic meats, ranging from snakes and bats, to turtles, raccoons and pangolins. Experts believe that consumption of pangolin meat is the source of the novel coronavirus which has claimed over 2000 lives in China.
Animal lovers have hoped for a ban on China’s consumption of dog meat for years – canines rounded up for yearly dog meat festivals are typically subjected to unimaginable pain before being killed because many people believe that the more stressed the dog is, the better the meat will taste.
Before the dog-meat ban proposal is passed into law, officials want to hear from the public.
