An Arizona man who killed K-9 Officer Bane after leading Phoenix Police on a high-speed chase was sentenced  on Thursday to prison for more than 25 years.

According to AbcNews, Jairo Adair Contreras Quintero and his companion, Laura Dagino, were spotted driving a stolen car on April 17, 2018. The two sped off and then carjacked two more vehicles at gunpoint during their crime spree. Spikes stopped the vehicle a short time later where Dagino was arrested. Quintero ran into a vacant home and refused to listen to authorities to surrender.

Police sent three-year-old Belgian Malinois K-9 Officer Bane into the home to help apprehend the suspect. When officers entered the house they found Quintero hiding, but were unable to initially find the dog. Bane’s handler heard the dog breathing heavily and called out to Bane, but the dog didn’t respond.

Quintero was found leaning against a cabinet door – Quintero had bite marks on him resembling injuries from a dog. K-9 Bane was discovered inside of the cabinet seriously hurt. He was rushed to an emergency veterinarian where he died as a result of his injuries. Police report Bane died as a result of asphyxiation.

Quintero was charged with motor vehicle theft, trespassing, burglary, armed robbery, weapons violations, killing a service animal, animal cruelty and unlawful flight. He will serve 25 years and nine months in prison.

Laura Dagino was sentenced to three-and-a-half year sentence as part of a plea deal.

Rest in peace Officer Bane. You are a hero and we will all miss you.

  1. If the police won’t go inside a building out of concern for themselves, they should NOT send a dog in, either. I am not against police having K-9 help, but they shouldn’t be considered so expendable as to send them into a dangerous situation without back-up.
