Animal services – dog run over by car in Riverside was an ‘unfortunate accident’

Last weekend, disturbing video surfaced showing a small, white dog being run over by a black Mercedes in Riverside County, California. On Monday, Riverside County Animal Services issued a press release regarding their investigation into the case.

The animal welfare agency has stated that the incident was simply an unfortunate accident, writing:

After investigating the incident and speaking with sheriff’s deputies and the dog owner, Animal Services Officer Adam Haisten determined it was an unfortunate accident.

Animal services states that the short video clip “misleads the public,” and doesn’t tell the entire story. Investigators learned that the little dog had escaped from the yard after a gate was left open, and then someone ran over the pet. The agency writes:

The owner told me that the driver was not driving very fast and did not realize that they had hit her dog – she began yelling due to her dog having been hit and the driver, unknowingly, backed up to find out why she was yelling and that’s when the dog was hit again.”

Animal Services Officer Adam Haisten said the owner told her the incident was unintentional. It was believed that the vendor that captured the footage and posted the content on social media.

Animal Services Director Julie Bank said:

We already know that this footage has been viewed by tens of thousands of people, but we want to ensure the public that we investigated the matter fully. Of course, we feel terrible about the poor dog and our hearts go out to the pet’s owner. But it’s important to note that this was a very unfortunate accident.”

Nobody has addressed the numerous people who appeared to casually watch the tragic events unfold, or the apparent lack of urgency or care as the dog writhed in pain in the road before and after the car ran the pet over.
