An ailing and malnourished puppy was abandoned in a box outside of a San Marcos, California, convenience store on May 24. The six-to-seven-week-old Chihuahua puppy was in such poor health that she had to be humanely euthanized after being discovered and taken to the San Diego Humane Society facility.
The animal shelter had reached out to the public for assistance in locating the person spotted on surveillance video abandoning the pup near a trash container at the Circle Mart located at 202 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road. A portion of the Facebook post read:
A male suspect exited the backseat and entered the store. He returned to the vehicle and the female driver went into the store. While the female was inside, the male suspect took an uncovered box out of the car, placed it next to the trash receptacle near the front entrance of Circle Mart and returned to the vehicle.
After the post was made, tips led the authorities to the owner of the puppy, who is said to be “cooperating” with officials. The update reads:
Thanks to the attention generated by the media In this case, the owner of the puppy has come forward and is cooperating with our Humane Law Enforcement investigation. Because this is an open investigation, we cannot provide any additional details at this time.
No further information about the case, including whether or not the puppy’s owner will be facing charges, has been released.
