A Florida man is charged with animal abuse after his elderly dog was found suffering in dismal conditions outside of his Hollywood home. As reported by News 10, 61-year-old James McCrea was arrested after an alert utility worker noticed the badly neglected, senior dog lying in direct sunlight, on hot concrete.
The dog, dubbed Champ, was skin and bones, had sores on his body, and was too weak to walk. An animal control officer rushed the ailing dog to an area animal hospital, and a local rescue organization stepped up to cover veterinary expenses and offer a foster home, but the extreme neglect had taken a deadly toll and Champ could not be saved.
Five days ago, Good Karma Pet Rescue outlined Champ’s maladies, writing:
Champion is currently under 24-hour critical care after receiving a blood transfusion. As you can see he is severely malnourished and has ulcers on his skin. What you can’t see is the heartworm, old hip injury, air pockets in his chest and worst of all the lung cancer that he’s too weak to receive chemo for.
Three days later, word of Champ’s passing were shared with the rescue group’s Facebook followers:
Champ did not die alone. Instead of giving his last breaths lonely and forgotten, suffering from excruciating pain under a heap of trash in a junkyard, he left this earth surrounded by people who cared for him and did everything possible to make him feel loved and comfortable. This includes Officer Wohlitka, who shared a donut with him and then held him in his last moments. ❤️
This wasn’t supposed to end like this. She was actually there to escort him to his new foster home, but he quickly took a turn and had to be humanely euthanized.
Another dog, in better condition, was found at McCrea’s home – it was seized and taken to Broward Animal Care and Adoption.
