Abandoned dog and nine newborn puppies rescued from drain

An abandoned dog and her nine newborn puppies were rescued on Wednesday for a drain in the Elsies River. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA arrived at the scene and were joined by youngsters who helped.

After having been abandoned, the heavily pregnant dog likely burrowed into the drain for a safe spot to give birth, but ended up trapped.

“Nina was heavily pregnant. So Nina was dumped – Dumped on an open field in Elsies River and abandoned by those she had only loved all her life. She must’ve been so confused and scared and in her desperation to find a warm, sheltered place to give birth, she had forced her way into an impossible situation. She had safely delivered her nine puppies but she was trapped and couldn’t find a way out. Thank goodness her cries were heard from under the ground and thank goodness they fell on compassionate ears,” the animal rescue organization posted on their Facebook page.

Nina was rescued first, and it took a long time to rescue all of the puppies. As soon as the last pup was safely on the surface, Nina took over and began to care for her little ones. They are all safe and warm at the SPCA.
